Chantelle Newbery

Olympic Diver

Who inspired you to be a diver?

My mum took me along to a diving class because she knew I could do a somersault and loved being in the air.  I used to be a tumbler and it wasn't an Olympic sport so both mum and I thought diving would be a good sport for me to try.

Who were your heroes growing up?

In diving - Michael Murphy - he was so beautiful to watch, he trained hard and had the best results in Diving Australia at the time.

When did you 1st know that you had the talent to be an Olympian?

I started making open teams in 1995, so I started to think it was possible to be named on an Olympic team.

What is the best part about being in the Olympics?

Everything about the Olympics is amazing.  The atmosphere, the tension, the uniform, food hall, competition, training partners, living with all the best athletes in the world, watching your teammates win medals.  The lot - there is nothing bad about Olympics!

What advice do you have for an aspiring Olympic athlete?

Train harder than you think your body can cope with.  Dream big!  Don't make excuses not to do the work, find reasons to work harder!  Enjoy the challenge of persevering through the hard times!
