Ashely Wagner Figure Skater
|
What is the best part about being a figure skater? I think the physical freedom that comes with being on the ice is my favortie part of skating. The speed on the ice, the spins, jumping, anything that defies normal rules of physics is just incredible.
What is the toughest element or jump to do? Out of everything a skater can do, a quad jump is the hardest. Obviously, you rotate 4 times in the air and land on one foot, which is pretty impressive. Mostly men complete quads though, it is hard for the ladies to get all the way around! My hardest element right now is the triple triple combination.
Who were your heroes growing up? I always looked up to Tara Lapinski, who won the Olympics in 1998. She was the skater that inspired me to go to the Olympics myself.
What advice do you have for an aspiring skater? The only real advice I can give is to just be persistent and train hard. Skating is a tough sport, and it doesn't come easily for anyone. Young skaters watch the professionals who are pulling off quads like there is nothing to it and get frustrated when they can't land their doubles. You just have to work at it and get used to what you're doing.
What was your favorite subject in school? I was a big fan of History.
What is on your ipod? I have a lot of Jack Johnson on my ipod and John Mayer.
What has been your career highlight so far? 2010 Nationals is the most memorable moment of my career. I was competing for a spot on the Olympic team, and although I just missed the team, I skated with my heart in it and that is something I'll never forget..
What do you do in your free time? Once I'm off the ice for the day I try to stay as far away from skating as I can! I like to read, play tennis, bike, anything outside.
