Michael Schiavello

MMA Broadcaster

What advice do you have for an aspiring sports broadcaster/writer?

Enthusiasm and passion can help you accomplish most anything in life. Be enormously enthusiastic and with that enthusiasm will come the desire for constant self improvement and learning. Practice as much as you can. When I first began writing and broadcasting, I did as much as possible just to get experience. I would write for local papers, write for myself, look at other writers, see how they wrote and then apply what was good about their writing to my own writing but with my own flavour. Same with broadcasting. Listen to broadcasters you like, figure out what it is about them you like, and then practice yourself but adding your own flavour to it at the same time. You will not achieve the goals you want to in broadcasting and writing -- or in any endeavour -- without a whole heap of passion and ethusiasm driving you.

What has been the best MMA event that you have covered?

This is a hard question because they have all been fun and exciting in their own way. I would saw DREAM 9 was outstanding for many reasons. It was my debut HDNET MMA broadcast so I wanted to really make a show of it; the fights were amazing such as Kid Yamamoto vs Joe Warren; and it also had the Super Hulk tournament including Hong Mann Choi vs Jose Canseco which was a lot of fun and the ideal setting for me to show off my style.

Who were your heroes growing up?

My grandfather is my hero. He is a good, decent, hard-working, family man full of love and solid values. From a work perspective, I loved Gorilla Monsoon, who was a former wrestler but moreso for me was my favourite ever wrestling commentator back in the 1980s. His style of commentary mixed enthusiasm with humour with knowledge, which is exactly what I try to do.

What is your favorite subject in school?

English. I got my best marks for English and it allowed me the greatest freedom of expression, both aural and written. Also I enjoyed reading books a lot growing up, so yes, English had everything I was good at and enjoyed.

What is your favorite quote and why?

"The universe will always unravel as it should." People get very upset with their lives sometimes and frustrated. Sometimes you just have to sit back, knowing you have done as much as you can do, and let the Universe or Mother Nature or a higher power guide your life to where you are meant to be. Have no doubt that if you have put in the hard work and followed your heart genuinely, you are exactly where you are meant to be right now, even if you don't think so. The Universe is amazing. It will always take you somewhere positive, to where you're meant to go, so long as you don't stick forks of negativity in the road.

What is on your ipod?

Wow a whole mix of stuff! At the moment I'm enjoying listening to some David Guetta, particularly Toyfriend. Also that "Barbara Streisand" song gets a good workout. I love "Welcome to the Black Parade" by "My Chemical Romance" and some old school rock like Aerosmith's "Dude Looks Like a Lady."
