Emily Samuelson

Ice Dancer

What is your favorite part about being an ice dancer?

Being an ice dancer is great because it combines dance with athletics.  It’s always challenging and there is always room for improvement, so it pushes me to better myself.  I also love to dance and always have, and I like the fact that ice dancing allows me to express myself creatively and become someone else temporarily for each program.  I also really enjoy skating with someone else.  My partner, Evan Bates, and I have skated together for over a decade, so skating by myself is now extremely different and very boring!  He’s an amazing skater and great person and I’m honored to be his partner..

Who were your heroes growing up?

My heroes have always been my mom and dad.  They are both so inspirational and such role models for me.  They’re both level-headed, hard-working, kind-hearted people, and I strive to be like them.

What has been your career highlight so far?

My career highlight so far would have to be the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.  Or the 2002 U.S. Junior Championships.  Such opposite extremes!  In 2002, in the middle of Evan and my final program, I was overcome by such a sense of awe and adrenaline; it was at that moment that I knew I wanted to be a competitive ice dancer and compete with Evan.  The Olympics, on the other hand, were just such an amazing and indescribable experience!  Everywhere you looked there were Olympic rings reminding you where you were and that your training paid off because you were finally there.  The people were so kind and it was incredible to meet all the other athletes - both on team USA and from other countries – and I was able to have my family there to experience it with me!  This was definitely one of my biggest career highlights.

What advice do you have for an aspiring athlete?

Never give up!  If you love what you do, then keep doing it, whether or not you see results.  Sometimes it’s difficult and sometimes you’ll face setbacks but if you keep working at it and really put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything.  So set your dreams high and keep them soaring!

What is your favorite quote and why?

My favorite quote is “Dance like nobody's watching; love like you've never been hurt. Sing like nobody's listening; live like it's heaven on earth.”  It reminds me to live life to the fullest each and every day.  Sometimes I can be very logistical and have everything planned and organized, but life is more fun and rewarding when you put your whole heart into everything.

What is on your ipod?

Anything and everything!  Except rap.  If I’m to be honest with you, my iPod currently has a random mix of Christmas music, pop hits, musicals, country, Christian music, soft rock, oldies, and the occasional Disney song, just because their fun, nostalgic, and always put me in a good mood!
