What is your favorite part about being a journalist?

You are the first line of recording history.  When people go back to find out what happened in a particular game, you are the first reference that they have to the event.

What advice do you have for an aspiring journalist?

Be prepared.  Learn as much as you possibly can about sports.  But also, try as hard as you can to improve your craft.  Read everything that you can  Do your homework on the person you are going to interview.  They will no real quick if you know what you are talking about or not.  If they think you aren't prepared, they will shut down.  This will make for a very bad interview.

Who is the most unusual interview that you have had so far?

I had to ride a horse to interview Tony Casillas.  I was terrified to be on the horse - it was a really big horse.  It was on camera too.

What is your favorite quote and why?

It was from a movie - The Great Debaters.  "You do the things that you have to do, so you can do the things you want to do."   I tell my daughter this all the time..

What is the toughest part about being a journalist?

Probably the hours that you are away from your family and the travel.  I really enjoy the job though.  When something happens, like an earthquake.  Everyone else is running away from it and as a journalist you are going right there for the story.  It is hard for your family to understand this.  I covered the LA riots in the late 80's.  My wife could not understand why I was getting on the plan.  My boss called me right after it started and asked if I wanted to go.  I asked, "what time do you want me to go?".

What do you like to do in your free time?

Sports.  That is one of the cool things about what we do for a living.  It is our vocation and our advocation.  We love playing sports.  If I wasn't a sports writer, I would be watching all of the games.  All of my buddies from school think I have the best job, and I do!

Who were your heroes growing up?

The first one I remember was Sandy Koufax.  I knew everything about him.  I could mimick his pitching motion.  I had my Dodgers cap.  Elvin Hayes was another one.  I remember watching Earl Monroe.  I saw him on TV in black and white.  He was playing basketball like nobody I had ever seen before.

What was your favorite subject in school?

History, if you can believe it.  I graduated from high school thinking I would be a high school history teacher and a track coach.  I like going to Civil War battlefields.  There are a group of us that are history buffs.  Now, I get to record history..
