Randy Wells

Chicago Cubs

What has been your career highlight so far?

After spending time in the minor leagues, reaching the majors was a career highlight.  Beating the Cardinals at Busch stadium last year in front of families and friends was huge.

What advice do you have for aspiring baseball player?

Get outside.  Stay active outside with your friends.  You can even create your own game.  Have fun!  If you want to take it to the next level, it all depends on you.  How much you want it and how much work you are willing to put in.  Give it everything you've got and don't ever take no for an answer.  If someone says you can't do it, work harder and prove them wrong.

If you weren't a baseball player?

I wanted to be a teacher.  I always thought I would be coaching or something like that.  Its a cool thing to be able to teach or instruct children either in school or on the field.

Who were your heroes growing up?

I have an older brother who played for the Colorado Rockies for a little bit.  He was a good role model growing up.  He showed me the ropes.  This gave me a leg up on other guys.  In baseball, guys like Cal Ripken, Roger Clemens and Nolan Ryan.  When I was a bit closer to the majors, it was Chris Carpenter.  I really admired his work ethic.

What was your favorite subject in school and why?

I think art.  I always had an artistic side.  I drew a lot of baseball and football stadiums.  I also liked to build structures with legos.

What is your favorite quote?

Never Give Up and Treat People the Way You Want to Be Treated.  It is so important to show respect if you expect to be respected.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to travel a lot.  I'm a big music guy and have several friends who are musicians.  I like to travel and check out their shows.
