Mauro Ranallo

Broadcaster

What advice do you have for an aspiring broadcaster?

Make sure they have knowledge about MMA language and also language in general.  They should know about the moves and the holds.  Have a passion for what you are doing.  Be very prepared.  Having notes on each individual fighter really helps.  Preparation, passion, and the moves!

What is your favorite part about being an MMA announcer?

Being a fan first and foremost, I get to have the greatest seat in the house.  We are providing a soundtrack for the fight.  My favorite part is putting the headphones on.  I absolutely love MMA and love being a part of this is amazing.

If you weren't an MMA broadcaster, what would you be?

I have been very fortunate to have not only been an MMA broadcaster.  I was a hockey announcer and have announced just about every other sport.  I also get to host a daily radio show.  So if I wasn't an MMA broadcaster, I would still be some kind of an announcer or broadcaster.  I have been doing this since I was 16

Who were your heroes growing up?

I would say my family.  My parents came from Italy without any real education or money.  They worked hard to provide me the opportunity to do what I love.  As far as broadcasters, I was a huge fan of Howard Cowsell, Jim Robson and Vin Scully.

What would be your dream fight to watch?

I would say probably what everybody says - Anderson Silva and GSP.  That would be a super fight.  It would answer a lot of questions.  It would be great to see two fighters get together who have dominated their divisions.  GSP would have to put on some muscle to get up to 185 and I don't think there is any way for Anderson Silva to get down to 170 now.  He walks around at 215 or 220.

What was your favorite subject in school?

I did enjoy English, reading and writing.  I liked to learn about where words come from and why we say the things we do,  I enjoy the beauty of the languge.  I also enjoyed history and western civilization.  I love learning about just about everything.

If you could change something about MMA, what would it be?

I would improve the judging and the scoring system.  There have been some controversial decisions because of the 10 point system that was brought over from boxing.  I like what John McCarthy and Herb Dean are doing with their officiating academies.

What is the best event you have been a part of?

I have been to 31 Pride fighting events.  Each event was amazing because of the production values, huge crowds, and the talent.
