Weslye Saunders

Football

What is your career highlight so far?

My career highlight (or highlights) was probably scoring 2 touchdowns vs our rivals Clemson in the 2009 season. We won that game 34-17.

Who were your heroes growing up?

My heroes growing up were my parents. They taught me that playing sports is a privilege, and without an education, my athletic ability would go to waste.

What advice do you have for an aspiring football player?

My advice to upcoming football players would be to stay committed if they really love the game, and to use whatever motivates them as their driving force. For me, that driving force was people telling me that I was too big and too slow to play tight end.

What current NFL players do you play most like?

I think I play like Jermichael Finley of the Packers and Antonio Gates of the Chargers. Like them, I have a basketball background and can pose matchup problems for the defense.

Why should an NFL team draft you?  What can they expect from you?

An NFL team should draft me not only because of my size, athletic ability, and catching skills. Because I did not play a single down of football during my senior year of college, I am more committed to this game than I have ever been before. Coming into the 2010 season, I was ranked by some as the #1 Tight End in the nation. But when the game of football was taken away from me, all of that meant nothing, and I immediately became an after thought. I even surprised myself at how much I loved this sport, because I would sometimes not sleep or eat for days because I was so depressed about not being able to play or practice with my teammates--my family. I made mistakes that cost me dearly, and I take full responsibility for that. But I vowed that if given the opportunity, I will do whatever it takes to be a model player on and off the field, because I refuse to have this game taken away from me again.

What do you do in your free time?

In my free time I write a lot, and read different newspapers, books, and magazines.
