Mary Wineberg

Olympic Gold Medalist

What is your career highlight?

My career highlight would definitely have to be standing on the podium at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and getting my gold medal and flowers after running the 4x400 meter relay for Team USA. We posted one of the fastest time in the US in the relay at that time and it was honor to be able to ru with my team mates and of course my country. Tears came to my eyes as I heard the National Anthem being played and all I could think about was man this is awesome.....a total blessing.

What advice do you have for an aspiring Olympic athlete?

I always tell individuals that I meet and talk with that no matter what people may say to you, they have to believe first in themselves and want it. I tell kids to strive for their dreams, to dream big and work at it. Never give up because in my case I tried several times, when things didn't go as planned giving up crossed my mind, but I wanted it so I was going to continue to fight and drive for my goal.

Who were your heroes growing up?

My hero growing up would have to be anyone in my life who was a postive role model, inspirational and gave me good sound advice. My mom helped by providing for me and letting me know that any of my dreams can come true.

What is your favorite website?

My favorite website is of course www.marywineberg.com.

What do you do in your free time?

When I have free time, I am a home body and I enjoy spending time with my family. My daughter is at the age where she loves to run and play so we spend lots of time together when I am not traveling. I also like to read, shop and watch some of my favorite shows on TV.

How often do you hold your gold medal :) ?

I actually in the beginning held my gold medal a lot....haha it was like I couldn't believe that I had this awesome thing in my hand. I now look at it several times through out the month as i use it when I give speeches at various schools in Cincinnati.

What was your favortie subject in school?

English/reading and of course I enjoyed history also.

When did you know that you had the talent to be a world class athlete?

I knew that I had the talent to be a world class athlete when I graduated from college in 2002 and made my first indoor team in 2003 for the 4x400 relay. I saw many other talented runners some who were Olympians and I stated that I wanted to go that far also. It didn't become reality for me until 2005 when I made my first outdoor USA 400 meter final. I finnaly got it....what it took to be World Class...and it was the beginning of my dreams coming true.
