Katie Uhlaender

Skeleton

What is your career highlight so far?

My carreer highlight has to be when I won a silver medal at the 2008 World Championships, and my father was there to see it.  I had also won my second consecutive world cup title the previous week, and it mean the world for me to have my father there.

Who were your heroes growing up?

My father obviously!  He rocked!

How did you get into the skeleton event and now weightlifting event?

I had a friend talk me into trying skeleton.  Her name was Sara, and she was a bobsledder.  We met randomly at the gym, and she convinced me to go to Lake Placid to try it.  Eight weeks later I had tried the sport and I was National Champion.  I decided to go to the Olympics.  As for weightlifting, I just decided to go for it.  It is something that does not interfere with my training for skeleton, and will hopefully keep me out of trouble.  I'm tired of having surgery for all my injuries.

What do you think about when "flying" down the track?

NOTHING!  There is no time to think, only to act.  Nike nails it when they say "Just Do It"  All my prep is in my mind before I go down the track.

What was your favorite subject in school?

I'd have to say English or History.  History is like a story telling class...super cool, and English is a story telling class.

What advice do you have for an aspiring olympic athlete?

It's not that you are born with any special talent or extraordinary ability, but the extraordinary ability to work hard that will get you there.  It's about using everything you have, and putting heart in to whatever you do in life.  Being an Olympian is not just sport, it's about representing a movement to inspire others.

What do you do in your free time?

At the moment I'm tagging cattle. I also have a few recreational activities I like to do: boxing, surfing, mountain boarding, kite boarding, and hanging with my family on the ranch.
