Sarah Finecey - Phoenix Coyotes

Director of Community Relations & Fan Development

Executive Director, Coyotes Charities

-What did you study in school that helped prepare you for your job?  What was your favorite subject?

In school, studying interpersonal communication helped prepare me for my job.  I work with a wide-variety of people every day, therefore knowing how to communicate professionally has helped me tremendously!  Anything to do with writing was always my favorite!

-What do you like best about your job?

I love being able to help the community.  I am so thankful that a company pays me to help others.  I love volunteering and getting to work with amazing individuals who are dedicated to helping the youth within our community.

-What does a typical day look like for you?

I manage the players appearances.  So, every non-game day, I go to practice to make sure the players know where they need to go for their appearances, ask them to do other appearances and remind them of future appearances.  After practice, I come back to the office to answer emails and phone calls!  I generally have 1-2 meetings a day with different non-profit groups to see how we can partner.

-What advice do you have for someone interested in getting into the sports field?

INTERNSHIPS!  Sports is a career that is all about not what you know, but who you know!  Most of the time, there are only two ways to get into sports.  Through ticket sales or through internships!  You cannot start soon enough!  Graduating from college with no experience is the worst thing a student can do.  During internships, it is vital that people within the organization know you!  Most interns come in and don’t network.  Networking is very important thing one can do when looking for a job.

-Who were your heroes growing up?

I had a lot of teachers that were my heroes.  That is what I always wanted to be and looked up to teachers who were passionate to share their knowledge.

-I see that part of your job is running the team's charity.  What organizations/causes do you support?

Coyotes Charities supports all Arizona youth programs that promote education, sports, arts and health.  We fund about 70 organizations per season through our grant cycle.
