What advice do you have for an aspiring Sports Writer?

My advice to an aspiring sports writer is to be very persistent.  It is a hard industry to get in to because right know there are so many blogs that write for free.  You have to work hard to make people want to read your paper instead of them reading news on the computer.  Write as much as you can and be patient.

Who were your heroes growing up?

I love sports.  I was actually a Soccer player and coach before I was a journalist.  When I was a kid I didn't have any heroes in this business in since it never occured to me to be a journalist.  So, when I was a kid I looked up to athletes.  I was a huge Washington Redskins fan and Washington Capitals fan.  When I was 14 years old the United States qualified for the 1990 world cup, before than we haven't qualified in 40 years so I remembered some of the players and the players were sort of my heroes.

Who is the most interesting sports personality you've meant?

I would have to say Landon Donovan.  He is not only the best player but I've meant him and interviews multiple times.  He is a very thoughtfull nice person.

Why did you decide to get into sports writing?

It just kind of happened.  I was a Soccer player and a coach and I knew I wanted to be involved in the game.  I tried out for a minor league soccer team and didn't make the team, I had already liked writing so I started writing and I enjoyed it and was pretty good at it.  My boss gave me more and more assignments in since I was doing well and it eventually got me a job at washington post.  They told me that I would just me helping in the news room and not actually writing, a few months later they needed someone to write and cover a game and I did good, I wrote 800 peices.  I eventually wound up here at sporting news.

What was your favorite subject in school? And why?

History was my favorite subject.  I loved history as a kid because I found it fascinating.  I learned a lot from history.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I don't have much free time.  When I do I love to travel.

What is the most bizarre story you've written?

Before I worked for sporting news, I was the soccer writer and editor for AOL.  I was on a trip in Budapest, Hungary.  I had a friend of a friend who snuck me in to a champion league game.  We didn't buy a ticket because my friends had relationships with the security guard, it was a crazy night because I usually have a press pass and I get to go where fans don't get to go.  Here it was the opposite.  I wrote a story on the experiance and how Hungary has so many good people that helped people out.
