D-D Breaux
LSU Gymnastics Coach

-Who inspired you?
I heard Helen Thomas speak many years ago.  In her speech she empowered women to do all they could to get equality for themselves and for future generations of women in the workplace.  I have never forgotten her inspiring words and her compelling personal story.  Many people throughout my life have made an impact.  My parents have always been a source of inspiration and motivation.  One of 8 children growing up in South Louisiana in the early 50’s was fun and exciting.  My parents never gave us limitations and gave us all 100% support in any endeavor that we were passionate about.

-How does someone become a coach?
Being an athlete and knowing what it means to be committed is important.  Knowing what it takes to be personally committed is a great start in knowing how to get commitment from others.  Having a working knowledge of the fundamentals of a sport and being willing challenge yourself to grow and never stop learning about the sport that you want to coach is fundamental in the growth process that is involved in making coaching a career

-What is your career highlight?
The most recent highlight was to have the #1 All-Around gymnast at the 2010 NCAA Championships.  Susan Jackson  was also the SEC, NCAARegional and the AAI National Gymnast of the year.  She completed this sterling list of accolades with a National Title on the Balance Beam with a  near perfect performance.  I have had many, this is the MOST recent!!

-What is difficult about being a coach?

Sometimes the young people that we are charged with do not make good choices.  Sometimes they get seriously off track and make decisions that are not representative of what our team and university culture represents.  Dealing with these situations and sometimes having to dismiss individuals from the team is always the most difficult part of my job. We like to think that we have “safety-nets” and support programs in place to help mentor our student-athletes.  But cultural and outside influences are sometimes stronger and pull harder than the positive and the support we have to offer.  Also, when a coach has to deal with injuries that will sometimes end a student-athletes career it is very difficult.
