Olympic Gold Medalist

Volleyball

What is your favorite part about being a volleyball player?

The team aspect.  I love being on the court with the guys and having to communicate all the time.  We all have to come together as a unit.

What is your career highlight?

The Olympic gold medal.  That was the most amazing thing that has happened in my volleyball career.

Who were your heroes growing up?

I’d have to say first and foremost my mom.  She was always there for me, taking me to all my games and practices.  She never complained once about ever having to take me somewhere or buy me something even though they didn’t have a lot of money.  She got me everything I needed to succeed.  She raised me as someone to be humble and never take anything for granted.

If you weren’t a volleyball player, what would you be?

A golfer, golf is sweet.  I’ve been around team sports my whole life with volleyball.  All the pressure would be on you.  You take the fame and glory yourself, and you also take the downs by yourself.  It would be cool to be outside in nature and playing a great sport.  You also can make a lot of money, I can’t forget that.

What was your favorite subject in school?

I’d have to say PE.  I got to play sports all day.

What advice do you have for an aspiring pro athlete?

You hear all the time from different athletes, never give up on your goals or dreams.  Too many people let injuries or words from other people get them down.  They then think twice about what they can or can’t do.  You have to follow it.  If somebody tells you can’t do something, use this as fuel for your fire.  Always think of this while training or playing your sport.  Use the negative and make it a positive.
