Pat Healy

MMA Fighter

What advice do you have for an aspiring MMA Fighter?

I would say one of the most important things is to find a good gym with people who genuinely care about you.  Having the proper training is key to progressing fast.  People look at MMA and do not realize how technical it is.  Getting the proper instruction and learning how to do things right the first time will save you a lot of trouble of having to go back and re-learn techniques because somebody who thought they knew what they were doing taught you wrong.  I have also seen many people ruined by trainers who  just want to make a quick buck off you, or just offer you no guidance.  It can greatly shorten you career and possibly get you seriously hurt.

What is your career highlight so far?

I think my recent win over Maximo Blanco is the highlight of my career so far.  It was on the main card of a very big show and it got a lot of media attention.  Maximo used illegal strikes early in the first round that dazed me, so I had to overcome some serious adversity to get the win.  I also used a move, short choke from the back crucifix, that no one else has used in MMA at this point. I had been working on that move a lot and it was very satisfying seeing my hard work pay off.

If you had the choice who would you like to fight?

I would like to fight Josh Thomson because he has been the only fighter to beat me at 155 pounds.  He is also someone I watched for many years early in my career and I always liked his style and respected him a lot.

If you were not an MMA Fighter what would you be?

I think I would be a dog trainer, more specifically training bird dogs to hunt upland birds.  I have a german wirehair pointer, who is an excellent bird dog, and I absolutely love taking him hunting and watching him comb a field for birds.  I really love all dogs and I think getting to do what you love and wake up happy every day is what life is ultimately all about.

What was your favorite subject in school? And why?

I always really enjoyed English.  I loved writing stories of all kinds while I was in school.  I still enjoy it to this day and I wish I had more time to do it.

What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time I love to spend it hiking, hunting and basically just doing anything in the outdoors.  I moved to Eagle Creek, OR on a large property in the mountains about a year ago and I can say there is no place I would rather be.  There is nothing like soaking in the beauties of nature and spending your free time in it.  I feel so free and alive while in the outdoors its like recharging your batteries and I don't think it gets any better.

What is the most bizarre thing you've seen in the cage?

I hate to admit but probably the most bizarre thing I've seen in the cage happened to me.  It was in an amateur fight and the jock strap I was wearing some unhooked and my cup was hanging out of the bottom of my shorts.  My twin brother, who was cornering for me, had to come into the ring and I had to drop my pants and he had to help me reattach it.  It was very humiliating and I was very lucky I wore underwear under my jockstrap. If I hadn't my bare behind would have been exposed to the crowd!
