1.) What advice do you have for an aspiring author?

Write. A lot. The problem with most people is they want to wait until they have a job or a writing assignment before they practice and hone their skills. Write whether you expect anyone to read your work or not. You get better by doing. You also have to learn how to be organized to be an author because there is so much more to cover in a book than in a newspaper or magazine piece.

2.) What inspired you to become an author?

I wanted to get more in depth than I could as a magazine or newspaper guy. I wanted to really explore people or topics and when you have 100,000 words to do it, you can be so much more thoughtful.

3.) What was it like writing a book with Mr. Oher?

Incredible. Many stars are difficult to connect with. Not Michael.  His humility made him the perfect person to profile. And the longer I worked with him, the more I like him. That doesn’t always happen!

4.) Typically, how long does it take to write a book?

Between research, interviews, writing a re-writing it is close to a year.

5.) What was your favorite subject in school? And why?

I loved math, interestingly enough, because I love logic. I think that desire to “understand” how things worked actually has played a big part in my success as a writer, too!

6.) What do you like to do in your free time?

Play basketball. I have a full court at my house and I love the game. I’d play all day every day if I could…
