Lauren Madden

NFL Cheerleader

How did you first get involved in cheerleading?

I started dancing at a dance studio when I was three years old.  At five, I was dancing competitively until I graduated high school. It consisted of long hours, but I enjoyed every minute of it.  I continued dancing in college participating in various shows and pieces. I was also a cheerleader from the fifth grade until my senior year in high school.

What advice do you have for an aspiring cheerleader?

Be proud of who you are because you are beautiful!  We are all have our strengths and weaknesses. Show off your talents and work hard on your weaknesses.  Love yourself!

What does a typical "game day" consist of for you?

Game Days are very exciting! The cheerleaders are the first ones on the field!! We get to the stadium 6 1/2 hours before game time. So if a game is at 1:00pm, we are there at 6:30am! Once I get to the stadium I unpack my bag and run to the field to start practicing with my teammates. The cheerleaders have to look good for our 60,000+ Colts fans! :]  After practice I come in the locker room to eat and hang out.  Then it's time to start getting ready. The girls and I usually listen to some music to get ourselves pumped up. I get my hair and make up done and it's off to do appearances. I love going out and meeting the fans.  They rock!  Once the appearances are over I do some "touch ups" and get ready to take the field. The cheerleaders perform a pregame dance before the game starts to get the fans on their feet. Then it's GAME TIME!  It's so neat to be able to be on the field during games. After the game is over, I am exhausted! I can't wait to go to bed!

What is the most bizarre thing you have witnessed while on the field?

What a great question! Sometimes NFL cheerleaders wear extensions in their hair. These are clip on hair pieces that make your hair fuller and they keep curl really well. One time we had just performed our pregame routine and it had a lot of hair whips in it!  We did great and hit everything hard!  We were running off the field and the football players were running on the field. We watched as one of the big players stopped and bent over to pick something up looking a little confused. It was one of the hair extensions! He ran over and gave it to our coach! We were laughing so hard! That was definitely the most bizarre thing I've witnessed while on the field!!

What is the most difficult part about being an NFL cheerleader?

Although being a NFL cheerleader is fun, it comes with a lot of hard work!  One of the most difficult parts is trying to balance real life with cheerleading life.  Being a cheerleader makes my already busy life even crazier!  Time management is definitely an important quality. Having a planner helps!  I write down EVERYTHING in that thing!  I have to make sure I'm getting my deadlines done at work, eating healthy, going to practice, practicing outside of practice, working out, and trying to find time for myself too!  Sometimes I get discouraged, but I take a deep breath and realize what a great experience this all is.

What is the best part about being an NFL cheerleader?

There are SO many wonderful things about being a cheerleader for the NFL!!! I have an amazing squad with such sweet, awesome, and diverse women.  Some of us are still in school, some are nurses, lawyers, teachers, financial advisors ... you name it!  We have so much fun together on and off the field.  I'm very honored to know this wonderful group of ladies.  Another great part about being a cheerleader is the experiences we get to have.  We get the opportunity to go overseas and perform for the troops.  I cheered in Miami for the Super Bowl 44!  My most recent experience was being a host cheerleader for Super Bowl 46.  I was able to be downtown every day for the excitement. I got to sing on the Verizon Stage in the Super Bowl Village and it was exhilarating!  I also got to zip line across the city!  My favorite part was dancing on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.  What a week!
