Olympic Skater

1.) What is your career highlight so far?

It's hard to just pick one career highlight because each competition is memorable for different reasons. But I'd say that winning the 2010 US. National Championship, breaking the current score record, and qualifying for the Olympic team was a pretty amazing experience. All of my hard work had come together at that point, and it was an extremely emotional moment to have met my lifelong goals.

2.) Who were your heroes growing up?

Within the sport, I was inspired by several people like Michelle Kwan, Sasha Cohen, Kristi Yamaguchi, Scott Hamilton, Dorothy Hamill, and Janet Lynn. I've always taken inspiration from other athletes outside of skating as well - since my parents and I are avid tennis fans, I grew up watching the Williams sisters, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, and Roger Federer. But I never really had just one hero aside from my parents. They mean the world to me, and I am so thankful for the life they've given me. They have supported me through the best and worst times in my career, and they will always be there for me.

3.) What is the most difficult maneuver to master?

Probably a triple-triple jump combination. For this combination, you jump once, rotate three times in the air, land, and immediately jump back up in the air for another three rotations. I learned how to do a triple toe-triple toe combination (there are several combinations as there are six triples) by the time I was 13, but worked on more difficult variants of that combination such as a triple lutz-triple loop. A triple lutz-triple loop has the highest point value aside from incorporating a triple axel (which only a handful female skaters have ever done), so that was pretty cool!

4.) What part of your skating are you most proud of?

I'm most proud of the artistic progression I made this season, despite having a pretty rough go at some competitions. I finished at Nationals with a really strong performance, and overcame a lot of negative criticisms by performing very well. That was just as rewarding as making an Olympic team.

5.) What advice do you have for an aspiring skater?

My motto is to work hard, play harder. Skating shouldn't feel like a job - it should be fun! A lot of people take it too seriously, but it's important to remember that sports are there to build self-esteem, good life skills, and discipline. If skating isn't your thing, find something your passionate about and pursue it. Take advantage of the opportunities presented to you and run with it!

6.) What was your favorite subject in school?

My favorite subject was chemistry because my teacher, Janie Mueller, was incredible. She made a (sometimes) dry subject interesting and made the best chocolate chip cookies for 100% on tests and quizzes. Needless to say, I studied really hard for tests in that class!

7.) What do you like to do in your free time?

Free time is a luxury for me since my academic and athletic schedules are quite demanding, so I enjoy relaxing on the beach or outside in the sun with a good book. I really enjoy volunteering, spending time with family and friends, and hanging out with my dogs.

8.) What is your favorite websites? why?

Well, I go on facebook and twitter, but I try to avoid it as much as possible... They can be a huge waste of time! Aside from that, I watch hulu to catch up on shows since my roommate and I don't have a TV in our dorm room.
