Stephanie Chernick

Islanders Ice Girl

1.) How did you first become an ice girl/cheerleader?

I figure skated my whole life and my friend who plays hockey suggested I try out to figure skate for the Islanders. When I found out, I called to get more information but missed auditions by 1 day. I had to wait another year. Finally the next summer I tried out, but was in a tough situation because I was also offered a skating show in Florida. I decided to skate in the show that year. Finally the next summer, my 3rd time, I became an official ice girl. During the auditions we do freestyle, specific skating moves, and skate with the flags. Later we had private interviews. I was so excited to be on the team!

2.) What is the most bizarre thing that you've witnessed while working a game?

Some of the fans get pretty bizarre. The best are the guys that wear head to toe orange spandex body suits and prance around the Coliseum doing wacky dances. One time I had to do a TV time out with them and a guy dressed as a banana. It was pretty funny.

3.) What is one thing that the casual fan may not know about cheerleading and/or pro hockey?

Our team consists of all accomplished skaters.  Most of us have been competitive figure skaters and have had great skating careers. We also cheer and dance at games so we are a very well rounded ice girl squad in the NHL. We also are ambassadors for the team an go to many charities and events. The Islander ice girls are also the first ice girl squad.

4.) What advice do you have for an aspiring cheerleader/pro athlete?

Stay determined and persistent! If you want something bad enough and work at it hard enough, eventually the dots will connect.

5.) What was your favorite subject in school and why?

I was really good at math. I liked to solve problems, but I also liked working on group assignments. I always liked the social aspect and working on teams. Teamwork never ends whether your in class or skating with the NHL.

6.) Which sports did you play growing up?

I was on the ski team for a little and ran the hurdles for the track team. However figure skating was always my priority!
