Ronda Rousey

MMA Fighter

-What has been your career highlight so far?
My favorite moment in my martial arts career was winning the 2007 judo world championships semi final. The Brazillian crowd that was booing me in the beginning of the day was going crazy cheering for me by the end of the tournament. I was fighting the defending world champion edith bosch and was behind by a yuko (a decent score in judo) she then did an illegal move and dislocated my elbow. I kept fighting though and with only 23 seconds left I threw her for ippon (a judo equivalent of a KO). The crowd went absolutely insane like I was one of their own, it was just like being in Rocky IV

-Who were your heroes growing up?
My mother is and always has been my hero. She won the world championships in judo, got her Ph.D, started her own consulting company and raised 4 daughters. My mom is the person who made me see anything you want to do is possible if you're willing to work harder than anyone else.

-What advice do you have for an aspiring MMA fighter?
The worst thing that can happen is you will lose. Failure is a friend that's misunderstood, you can only learn a fraction as much from winning as you can from losing. The worst thing you can do is fear losing. He/she who fears failure the least and wants to win the most will will 99.999% of the time.

-What is the best sporting event you have attended?
The Olympics - duh!

-What would you be if you weren’t a pro athlete?
A coast guard rescue swimmer, I almost signed up with them in 2009 but decided to give this mma thing a shot first.

-What was your favorite subject in school and why?
Well my favorite subject is science, but I didn't enjoy it much in school after I started high school. I still watch any kind of scientific documentary tivo can deliver though. Theoretical physics, biology, geology, astrology its all fascinating. Learning about the world/universe is more entertaining than any kind of sitcom.
