Pro Lacrosse/MMA

1.) What advice do you have for an aspiring lacrosse player/MMA fighter?

For lacrosse players, the best advice I can give is to play. Play in tournaments, play pick up games, play in leagues. Play as much as you can. If you really want to be a great player it will happen by keeping a stick in your hand as much as possible. For MMA fighters, find a good gym. By "good gym" I mean find a gym that has quality instructors in all aspects of the fight game, and has a good atmosphere for hard work and learning. Don't train somewhere once a week then roll around in a basement with a friend trying stuff you saw on youtube or a UFC video game. And take your time. Good fighters train for years before they ever set foot in a cage.

2.) What is your career highlight so far?

My career highlight in lacrosse is winning the 2011 MLL Championship with the Boston Cannons. It was a great team to be a part of and I'm looking forward to repeating in 2012. My career highlight in MMA was fighting at the Tsongas arena 5 minutes from my home and having it filled with family, friends, and fans while I won by KO in the first round. Hopefully there will be many more highlights that will top this one coming soon.

3.) Which one is harder, Lacrosse or MMA?

Lacrosse and MMA are both difficult in their own ways. Lacrosse games are about 2 hours of constant running and mostly a leg workout. MMA fighting is the most physically demanding full body workout you can have in that short amount of time. MMA is also a lot more mentally draining. Getting beat on twice a day everyday and cutting weight can really wear on you and make you want to quit. But once you push through it, make weight and get to the fight, there is no better feeling than getting your hand raised at the end of a war.

4.) Who were your heroes growing up?

My heroes were my dad, Matt Hughes, and Peter Inge.

5.) What was your favorite subject in school? Why?

My favorite subject was math.

6.) What do you like to do in your free time?

In the little free time that I have I love snowboarding or going to the beach. Really anything active. I also like to enjoy some downtime playing NHL '12.
