Who is Next for Jose Aldo?

By Matthew Pearlman
March 26, 2012

Who is he going to fight? Could anyone even beat him? One thing we know is Jose Aldo will be back in the cage trying to defend his UFC Featherweight Title in Calgary on July 21,2012.  Jose Aldo has a near perfect record 21-1, most coming from KO (13).  He holds notable wins over Chad Mendes, Mark Hominick, and Kenny Florian.

Everyone wonders who he will fight in Calgary.  Possible fighters UFC will put against Aldo could be the winner of Dustin Poirier vs. Chan Sung Jung.  Dustin Poirier is 12-1 with wins over Josh Grispi, Pablo Garza, and Max Hollaway.  He would have one of the best chances against Jose Aldo.  Chan Sung Jung fairly new to the UFC, holds a huge KO win over former challenger Mark Hominick  (7 seconds),  and a submission over Leonard Garcia.  He is a well-rounded fighter.  Both of these guys could beat Jose Aldo, but only if it is on the ground.  Jose Aldo is a very dangerous striker.

One guy that everyone thinks will fight Jose Aldo is Hatsu Hioki.  The former Sengoku Featherweight Champion is 26-4-2.  He holds notable wins over Bart Palaszewski, George Roop, Marlon Sandro, and Ronnie Mann.  The problem with Hatsu Hioki fighting Jose Aldo is that he has only had 2 fights in the UFC, and he barely slipped past George Roop.  It is hard to get Jose Aldo on the ground so Hatsu Hioki would have a hard time with trying to submit him, and if it is stand up Jose Aldo will win very quickly. I think that Hatsu Hioki needs to fight a couple more times in the UFC so we can see more of what he can do before he gets a title shot.

Prediction: I think that the winner of Dustin Poirier vs. Chan Sung Jung will get a title shot at Jose Aldo.  As far as who wins this fight I would go with Dustin Poirier to beat Chan Sung Jung by Submission.  But they both deserve a title shot.
