-What is the hardest part about writing a book?

The hardest part is after I have worked on the thing for nearly a year and I turn it into my editor, and she asks me to make major changes that I don't agree with.  That is really disheartening.  But it is a negotiation.  I will make some of the changes that I think will make the book better, and if I don't feel that way I don't.

-Why did you want to become an author?

I never took a writing class in my life.  I went to college (Rutgers) and studied psychology.  I even went to graduate school for two years.  But then I decided that I didn't want to be a psychologist.  I didn't know what to do with my life.  So I thought, "What do I like to do?"  And I always enjoyed writing letters to my friends.  Writing always came naturally to me.  So I decided to be a writer.  And the rest is history!

-How long does it typically take to write a book?

It depends on the book.  The My Weird School books come out every three months, so I have to write them really fast--about a month.  My baseball card adventure books, on the other hand, are for older readers and I have to spend a lot of time researchingthem.  So I may spend a year on one of those.

-What advice do you have for aspiring writers?

Don't try to write the next Harry Potter or A Series of Unfortunate Events.  Find your own voice.  Don't use a bunch of five syllable words trying to impress people.  Read your rough draftout loud to yourself.  And go to my web site (www.dangutman.com) and click TIPS FOR YOUNG AUTHORS.
