Clint Barmes

Pittsburgh Pirates

1.) What is your career highlight so far?

The highlight of my career would have to be Opening Day in 2005 when I was with the Colorado Rockies. I was the Opening Day starter at shortstop and went 4-for-6 with a game-winning, walkoff home run off Trevor Hoffman. That is something I will never forget.

2.) What advice do you have for an aspiring baseball player?

Practice as much as possible. You can never work too hard.  Listen to your coaches. If you are going to stand out, do so in a positive way. Don’t do something negative that will make people remember you.

3.) Who were your heroes growing up?

Ozzie Smith.

4.) What is something about being a pro baseball player that a casual fan wouldn't know?

The amount of time we actually spend at the ballpark. For a 7:00 start, I arrive around 2:00 and leave about an hour after the game. So that is roughly nine hours each day at the park. Some people think players just show up around 5:00 and get ready for the game, but there is a lot of preparation that goes into a game each day.

5.) Describe a time when you had to persevere through a difficult situation.

Coming back from my injury in 2005 is probably the one that sticks out the most in my mind. I was having a pretty solid rookie season until I got injured on June 5 of that season. I was hitting .329 when I went on the disabled list and really couldn’t find my stroke when I came back in September. Just spending all that time on the D.L. that season and rehabbing from the broken left collarbone was tough.

6.) What was your favorite subject in school? why?

Math. Just because that’s what I was best at.
