Zumiez Couch Tour Takes Over Baltimore

By:  Shannon Stern

The 2012 Zumiez Couch Tour rolled into Baltimore Monday. Although it was gloomy and rainy, that didn’t stop any of the fun that was to be had. The Girl skate team was putting on a demo as well as signing autographs for the fans and Set Your Goals and Conditions were playing a concert to round out the day.

Set Your Goals was asked to join the Couch Tour by their groupies. Their fans love going to the Couch Tour and it would make their experience even better if their favorite band played as well. Making it their “shortest summer tour,” Set Your Goals decided to join the Couch Tour on a few of their stops this summer. Being into skateboarding also led to Set Your Goals being a perfect fit for this event. Some fans, like Francisco Barbosa, came to the Couch Tour only to see Set Your Goals. While he “used to skate,” Barbosa is “more into music and came to see Set Your Goals,” not to mention collecting free stuff along the way.

However, fans such as Cody Godbille and Miles McCollum came to see the Girl team, especially Sean Malto. Malto is their favorite skater on the Girl team. They all watched him compete last weekend at Street League and said that “although Malto usually does better, [we] expected Nyjah [Huston] to win.” They’ll both be watching the X Games next weekend, cheering Malto on along the way.

Along with the live action going on at the event, Chris Pastras, along with Jackie Montgomery, cover all of the action for a live online webcast for Zumiez. “The camaraderie and the ability to promote skateboarding” are the best part of doing the webcast, Pastras stated. It’s great to “see your friends succeed.” By doing these events and broadcasting them to the general public, it allows them to better understand the world of action sports and skateboarding, something the general public doesn’t really know about.

Also out at the Couch Tour were Brian Schaeffer and Rob Meronek from the Skatepark of Tampa.  They “work with Zumiez with their events” and were brought up to Baltimore to “do a piece on it for SPoTLife,” their YouTube channel program, said Schaeffer. Each new event helps everyone make each event better and understand the end result better. While both Schaeffer and Meronek agreed having Lil Wayne at this year’s Tampa Pro was “sick,” it did cause a distraction from the skateboarding that was going on, as he was skating on his own in another section of the park as well. Both were excited to be in Baltimore with the Girl skate team, especially to see Brian Anderson, Meronek’s favorite Girl skater.

The event went on successfully, although the weather threatened to change it all. The Girl team killed it in the demo and signed a plethora of autographs for their fans. The concerts pleased the fans as well. Zumiez, as well as all of the Couch Tour’s sponsors, put on a great event!
