What is My Advice for Aspiring Young Authors?

By:  Matthew Pearlman - Author & Founder of TeensOnSports.com

Athletes have been great to me.  They have allowed me to interview them for TeensOnSports.com and for my book - That's Great Advice - Advice from Pro Athletes for Kids, Written by a Kid. Without their willingness to be interviewed and their great advice - there would be no website or book. The advice that I have received has really helped me as a writer and author - but more importantly as a person. The lessons and character traits of - honesty, integrity, positive attitude, hard work, perseverance, giving back to others are things that all kids, teens and people should know and live by. In case they have not learned these at home or at school, I hope that they will follow the advice of major athletes. These athletes are idols for kids because of how many home runs they hit, how fast they run, and how many points they score. My hope is that they will equally be someone's idol because of their positive messages and life experience.

Earlier this week I was thrown a curveball when being interviewed for a sports radio show. They asked for my advice for aspiring writers. This is the first time anyone had asked me this question. It felt strange to be on the other side of the table. I had asked that question to over 500 athletes.

My answer to advice for aspiring writers or authors is to work hard, follow your dream, and not be discouraged. It took me a long time and many rejections before I received my first interview (with NHL Hall of Famer Brett Hull). It was a lot more fun to hear "yes" than it was to hear "no". My parents always tell me that anything worth having is worth fighting for. They also say that things that come to easy aren't worth having.

Good luck to all the kids and teens out there who have dreams and aspirations. Don't let anyone discourage you! You can do it - I did!
