The Bird is the Word

By Shannon Stern

…the Oriole Bird that is. Tonight was the night, as the Orioles travelled to Texas to play the Texas Rangers in the American League Wild Card game. This was the Orioles’ first time in the postseason since 1997. Everything was on the line during this game, with both teams looking to make it to the American League Division Series.

The game started with the Orioles’ J.J. Hardy putting the team on the board, leading 1 – 0 in the top of the first. However, the lead was short-lived, as the Rangers scored in the bottom of the first, leaving the score tied at one.

But, the Orioles never lost their fire. Hardy scored again in the sixth inning off of Adam Jones’ sacrifice fly, making the Orioles top the Rangers, 2 – 1.  Nate McClouth, up to bat in the seventh inning, hit a single, leading Robert Andino to score. This brought the score up to 3 – 1.

While the O’s were up going into the ninth inning, the game was far from over. Many Machado hit a single, bringing Lew Ford in to score. With the score now 4 – 1, McClouth’s sacrifice fly brought Andino home. The score was then 5 – 1 going into the bottom of the ninth.

The game still wasn’t over. During the bottom of the ninth, with two outs, there were three Rangers on base. Both Rangers’ and Orioles’ fans were tense with anticipation. Would the Rangers be able to score and the game continue on? Could the Orioles end the game right there with a third out? The latter proved to be true.

With the “O” restored to Baltimore, the Birds return home to face the New York Yankees, the long-heated rival of the Orioles, in the first two games of the series. The American League Division Series starts Sunday and can be watched on TBS. Time to #BUCKleUp! Let’s go O’s!
