Mixed Reviews for Fall Sports Season at USC

By Shannon Stern

USC was coming in hot to the 2012 Fall Sports Season. However, not all of their teams were able to keep up with the hype.

USC’s Men’s Water Polo team was riding the wave of their four consecutive NCAA Championship wins. This season proved to be smooth sailing for the team. The team won all of their matches this season, making their record a whopping 29 – 0. Sunday’s NCAA Championship game tested the team. USC played their cross-town rivals, the UCLA Bruins. The Trojans fought hard from start to finish. Kostas Genidounias, with the help of Matt Burton, scored with forty seconds left in the game, making the score 11 – 10 in favor of the Trojans. As time ticked down, the Bruins were unable to score. The Trojans have now won five consecutive NCAA Championships and prove they are a force to be reckoned with!

The Women of Troy have also battled hard this season. The Women’s Volleyball team has showed their strength throughout the season. With an overall record of 29 – 5, the Women of Troy were the fourth-ranked, sixth-seeded team going into Thursday and Friday’s NCAA First and Second Rounds. In both matches, the Women of Troy rose above their opponents, winning their first match against Fairfield 3 – 0 and their second match to St. Mary’s College 3 – 0 as well. The team moves onto the NCAA Championship Round of 16 for the fifth time in seven years. They’ll play their next game on Friday in the Austin Regional semifinal at the host school, University of Texas.

Coming off of sanctions, the USC Football team had a lot of hype to live up to. This was the first season they were bowl eligible in two years, Matt Barkley turned down the opportunity to go into the NFL last year in order to finish out his four years at ‘SC, and the team came into their first game ranked number one in the nation. That all was about to change. In a season of twists and turns, the Trojans ended their season with Barkley on the sidelines and with an overall record of 7 – 5. But, their season is not over yet. They are set to play the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on December 31stin the Hyundai Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas. USC has played in the Sun Bowl twice before and has played the Yellow Jackets four previous times. The New Year’s Eve game will be broadcast live on CBS at 2 pm EST.

Look out for ‘SC to come back with vengeance during their appearance in the Sun Bowl as well as next season. Good luck to the Women of Troy on their quest for the NCAA Championship. Congratulations again to the Men’s Water Polo team on another win and keep up the good work. Fight On!
