Kevin Iole

Sports Writer

1.) What inspired you to get into writing?

I really wanted to be a baseball or football player, but I wasn't good enough. I loved sports so much, though, and I seemed to have a natural talent for talking and writing, that it made sense to become a sports writer. When I was in elementary school and then into high school, Watergate was going on and that really put journalists in the spotlight. That was also intriguing to me and I decided I wanted to go down that path.

2.) What is your dream fight to watch?

My dream fight is when the two best guys in the world happen to be in the same weight class and are going to fight each other. The fight I think I want to see more than any other now in MMA would be Jon Jones against Anderson Silva. That would be a fantastic fight.

3.) What advice do you have for an aspiring writer?

Read a lot and write a lot. Read a lot of different types of writing, too. Don't just focus on sports. Read fiction and non-fiction books. Read the major newspapers and web sites. Pay attention to the style the writers use. If you watch a game or a fight on TV, as soon as it is over, go write a story as if it were going to be published. When you're done, compare what you've written with some people you respect. Look at the way the professional writer wrote his or her story and compare it to what you've done. Note what you've done well and what maybe didn't work.

4.) What is your career highlight so far?

My career highlight has been getting the chance to work for Yahoo! Sports. I am colleagues with some of the greatest sports writers of this time and I get to work for the world's largest sports website. That's pretty cool to me.

5.) Who are some fighters to look out for?

Rory MacDonald is fantastic and is a future champion. I am also impressed by Rustam Khabilov, who just made his UFC debut.

6.) If you weren't a writer, what would you be? Why?

I think I would be a lawyer. I was always fascinated by the law and I love to talk.

7.) What do you like to do in your free time?

I love Apple computers, so I play with those a lot. I love to golf and I really enjoy spending time with, training and playing with my dogs. I have three Basset Hounds (Joey, Macy and Caper) and they're awesome.
