Soccer

What is your career highligh so far?

-I have two - winning the championship last year, and earning my first cap with the US National team last year against Sweden.  winning the championship was an amazing, surreal feeling that will be tough to duplicate.  Playing for the US Naitonal team is a little bit different, because it's an individual accomplishment, but it's something that I always dreamed about as a young athlete.

What did you know that you could be a pro athlete?

-I always hoped that I would become a professional athlete.  It was my goal, pretty much since I began playing sports.  The first time I realized that it might become a reality was when I started playing with the Olympic Team (U-23 National Team) - I was in college and many of the guys on the team were leaving school to go play professionally.  It was at that point that it hit me, and I knew there was a great chance that I too would turn pro soon.

What is the best part about being a pro soccer player?

-There are a lot of perks to being a professional soccer player, but the best part is the schedule.  We train a lot, and it's not always fun, but most of it is very enjoyable..  Personally, I love the game and the competition.  I can't imagine that I'd rather be doing anything else.

What teams did you follow as a youth?

-Growing up I followed Manchester United more than any other club team (this was before 1996, so there was no MLS).  They were on TV fairly often, and they were always fun to watch.  Guys like - Eric Cantona, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Peter Schmeichel.  they had some fantastic players and of course some great teams.  On the international level, besides the US of course, I followed the Dutch National Team.  My high school coach used to go to Holland and study their Total Football, and teach us their tactics.  I fell in love with their style of play.  It's amazing to me that they can produce so many good players in such a small country.

Who were your heroes growing up?

-Although soccer was my number one sport, I followed Michael Jordan more than any other athlete.  I was obsessed with his athleticsim, skill, and competitive attitude.  I didn't have any one soccer player that I followed quite as closely.  I always appreciated different players for what they brought to the table, and tried to take pieces of their skill set, and add it to my game - Litmanen's touch and vision, David's tenacity and Bergkamp's nose for goal.  I would watch those guys and try to emulate them all in different ways.
