The Baltimore Ravens are Super Bowl XLVII Champions

By Shannon Stern

What a game! What a season for the Baltimore Ravens; Art Modell passed away, Torrey Smith’s brother, Tevin ,passed away, Ray Lewis announced his retirement. The true team of destiny, the meaning of perseverance and determination.

With such a highly anticipated game on both sides of the field, the hype over Colin Kaepernick, Jim Harbuagh of the 49ers coaching against his brother John, the Ravens coach, and talks over Lewis and if Joe Flacco is an elite quarterback, this game was sure to be one for the books. Due to technical difficulties after half-time, game play was suspended for over thirty minutes. Super Bowl XLVII made history as the longest running Super Bowl in history, four hours and fourteen minutes.

The Ravens won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. While the 49ers were unable to capitalize on their opening drive, the Ravens did on theirs. Leading 7 – 0, the Ravens never looked back. Going into halftime with a 21 – 6 lead, it was almost a sure thing that Baltimore would be hoisting another Lombardi.

When the game resumed after Beyoncé’s thrilling halftime performance that included a reunion with the rest of Destiny’s Child, Jacoby Jones returned the opening kickoff for 108 yards. Now, Ravens fans breathed a sigh of relief. But, the game was far from over. Due to a power outage in the Superdome, game play was suspended. Once the game resumed, the momentum the Ravens were riding high on had shifted. The 49ers were not about to go down without a fight. San Francisco rallied back, making the score 28 – 23, Baltimore, at the end of the third quarter.

Like a storybook ending, it all came down to the fourth quarter. Baltimore scored first, making the score 31 – 23. But, San Francisco was determined not to end the game right then and there. They scored a touchdown, making it a two point game. However, they were unable to convert on the two-point conversion and turned the ball over to the Ravens. Justin Tucker kicked another flawless field goal, making the score 34 – 29. Once the Ravens held up the 49er’s offense at the goal line on fourth down, it was pretty much a sure thing that the Ravens would be victorious. Taking time off of the clock, Sam Koch ran out of the end zone, resulting in a safety. The game ended with the Baltimore Ravens defeating the San Francisco 49ers 34 – 31.

Throughout the course of the season, Flacco has shown he is a force to be reckoned with. He has an immensely strong arm and the power, will, and determination to win. He makes contested passes, risks it all, and has a strong confidence in himself, his ability, and his team. It is no wonder that he was named Super Bowl XLVII MVP. Flacco is an elite quarterback and will be in Baltimore for a long time.

This is the BEST feeling in the world! I was in elementary school when we last won the Super Bowl. I remember exactly where I was that day and where I watched the parade following our victory. This year, I am across the country at school. It is a different feeling, a surreal feeling. I could not be more proud to be from Baltimore. We have the GREATEST team in the world! Thank you, Ray Lewis, for making this team what it is today. I cannot predict the future and do not know what next season will be like, but one thing is for sure, you will be greatly missed. Congratulations to the Baltimore Ravens, WE DID IT!
