Tampa Pro 2013

By: Shannon Stern

What an epic weekend in Tampa! Skateboarding took over Tampa with the 19th annual Tampa Pro. The best of the best showed up to put their skills to the test. The contest was not the only thing to celebrate. Skatepark of Tampa was celebrating twenty years as well as Girl Skateboards.

Friday started out with the Industry VIP and Team Manager Contest. When all was said and done, Rodent Rodent came out on top. Scott Koerner and Bob Reynolds placed second and third respectively.

Next, it was the Pro’s time to shine. Saturday started bright and early with sixty four skaters showcasing their talent. Those who had previously won the Tampa Pro had already made it to the Semi-Finals and could bypass Saturday’s Qualifiers. After four rounds of incredible skateboarding, Ishod Wair and Luan Oliveira won the Golden Tickets. This meant that they did not have to skate in the Semi-Finals and could go straight into Sunday’s Finals. Skateboarding’s resident contest king, Nyjah Huston, placed third on Saturday.

Although the qualifying was over, the skateboarding on Saturday was not. Next up was the Silver Best Trick Contest. Skateboarding’s top skaters used the limited time to try their hardest tricks. The claps and cheers could be heard all around the skatepark. It was no surprise that Huston killed the competition, taking home top prize. Nick Merlino came in second place with Walker Ryan placing third. Saturday’s fun was not over yet. The Big Boi concert, the Tampa Pro Party presented by Converse, was held Saturday night at The Ritz.

Sunday was another early start. It was everyone’s time to shine. With Lil Wayne back in the house, everyone was pumped for a full day of skating. Previous Tampa Pro winner, Paul “PRod” Rodriguez, placed first in the Semi-Finals. Fellow Street League skateboarders Huston and Chaz Ortiz filled out the top three spots.

With the top twelve skaters making it to the Finals, it was anyone’s game. Oliveira proved to have what it takes to take the top spot, landing this year’s title of the winner of Tampa Pro. Huston placed second with Ortiz taking third. Prod came in fourth with Felipe Gustavo, another Plan B rider in the mix, placed eleventh. Newly pro Element rider, Evan Smith, placed eighth.

Now that contest season has officially kicked off, it should be interesting to see how the rest of the year plays out. X Games starts next month, with the Street League contest included, as well as the rest of the Street League stops, Dew Tour, and many other tours to come. Good luck to all the guys competing this year!
