NFL Draft 2013

By Shannon Stern

“And the first pick of the 2013 NFL Draft is…” the words fans, coaches, players, and sports fans alike have been waiting for. The Kansas City Chiefs have the first pick. Who will they choose? With a new head coach, Andy Reid, no one is certain the direction the team will be taken in. After winning the Super Bowl, the Ravens let many players go, most notably Ed Reed. Ravens leader Ray Lewis also retired after the season. Who will they choose with the 32nd pick? Following a disappointing senior season, Matt Barkley’s NFL future is in limbo. Tonight is the night he finds out where he will go after his collegiate career at USC. Lastly, you cannot forget Manti Te’o of Notre Dame. Many have speculated he will be drafted to Baltimore. Will he go sooner? Will he even get picked in the second round? Soon, all these questions will be answered.

Around 8:15 pm on April 25, 2013, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Eric Fisher, tackle, from Central Michigan, as the first pick of the first round. Congratulations, Fisher! The first two picks were tackles, continuing the trend from the 2012 draft that the first two draft picks are in the same position. Last year, the first two picks were quarterbacks.

Barry Sanders, the Madden NFL 25 cover star, as voted on by the fans, announced the fifth pick of the draft for the Detroit Lions. With this pick, the Lions selected Ezekiel Ansah, a defensive end from BYU. Something to note, there were no quarterbacks drafted in the first ten picks. The New Orleans Saints also had a special guest, Markell Gregoire, a patient at St. Jude’s, announce their first round pick as well. The Saints picked safety Kenny Vaccaro from Texas.

EJ Manuel, Florida State’s quarterback, was the first quarterback picked in the 2013 NFL Draft and was chosen by the Buffalo Bills. This surprised some, as Geno Smith from Wes Virginia and Barkley had not gone first. The armed forces came together to present the Minnesota Vikings’ first round draft pick. The Vikings picked Sharrif Floyd, a defensive tackle from Florida.

The Minnesota Vikings got three first round picks, thanks to some trades. Their third pick, in the twenty ninth position overall, stemmed from a trade with the New England Patriots, for which they gained four more draft picks in later rounds. For this pick, it was pre-planned that the NFL would have Joe Andruzzi, a former Patriots player who was at the Boston Marathon and helped save some of the victims, announce the Patriots pick. Andruzzi gave an emotional speech, thanking the first responders and survivors. He then showed a “Boston Strong” Patriots jersey with the numbers “617” on the back, representing the area code. “Sweet Caroline,” a staple at Red Sox games, then played in the background. Cordarrelle Patterson from Tennessee, a wide receiver, was then chosen as the twenty ninth pick of the draft.

Finishing up round one, Alec Ogletree, a linebacker from Georgia, was selected by St. Louis with the thirtieth pick. The Dallas Cowboys, with the thirty first pick, picked Travis Frederick, a center from Wisconsin. Ending the night with the thirty second pick were the Super Bowl Champions, the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens selected Matt Elam, a safety from Florida. With that, the first night of the NFL Draft comes to a close. No Te’o, no Barkley, no Smith. The second and third rounds start tomorrow, Friday, April 26th, at 6:30 EST.
