Another Historic X Games

By Shannon Stern

With two X Games stops in the book and two to go, there are high hopes for the rest of the season. X Games Barcelona bought out the best of the best. The gorgeous Spanish backdrop played home to action sports’ best from May 16th to the 19th.

History was made this weekend, as Alana Smith became the youngest X Games medalist. At twelve years old, Smith nabbed a silver medal in Women’s Skateboard Park. This was also the first time this contest was held in X Games history. Mitchie Brusco also landed the first 1080 in Skateboard Big Air, a first at X Games and only the third time the trick has been landed in a skateboarding competition.

History also repeated itself this weekend. BMX legend Jamie Bestwick secured his eighth straight X Games gold medal in BMX Vert. Bestwick also became the first in X Games history to win eight straight gold medals. Bucky Lasek continued his Skateboard Vert domination, bringing home back to back gold medals from the first two stops, Foz and Barcelona. Nyjah Huston repeated as well, edging out Paul Rodriguez at the last second to win the gold medal in the Street League Skateboarding Final. Garrett Reynolds won his sixth straight BMX Street gold medal, Bob Burnquist won his fourth straight gold in Skateboard Big Air, Pedro Barros won his third straight Skateboard Park gold medal, and Zack Warden won back to back gold medals in BMX Big Air.

Gary Young won his first ever X Games medal this weekend. Young took home the gold medal in BMX Park. Mike Mason took home gold in Moto X Speed and Style, Laia Sanz won gold in Women’s EnduroX, and Mike Brown won gold in Men’s EnduroX. Ronnie Renner took home gold in Moto X Step Up.

Sadly, the weather conditions did not cooperate for the weekend. Persistent wind and rain caused RallyCross and Moto X Freestyle to be canceled.

The next global X Games will be held in Munich, Germany from June 27th – 30th. Fans can also see their favorite Street League skateboarders competing in the first solo Street League stop this season on June 9th in Kansas City, Missouri. Many of the X Games athletes will also be competing in the Dew Tour Beach Championships in Ocean City, Maryland from June 20th – 23rd.
