Matt Mitrione

MMA Fighter

If you could pick any fighter to fight, who would it be?

If it could be anyone from any time period, it would be Rocky Marciano.  I would want to see how great he really was.  It would also be cool to fight Rocky Balboa to see how strong his jaw is.

What is your career highlight so far?

This is a bit of a trick question, since I have had 3 careers so far.  I was a college football player, a pro football player and now an MMA fighter.  I have had many highlights, but the most fun was probably playing in the Rose Bowl.  It was a great time.

Who were your heroes growing up?

My hero was my older brother Bob.  He was 2 years older than me.  I really didn't have any other heroes.  I just tried to live by the golden rule - treat others as you would like to be treated.

If you weren't a UFC fighter, what would you be?

I would be the president of a sports nutrition company.  That is what I do in my "real life" when not fighting.  I started up a sports nutrition company when I left the NFL.

What advice do you have for an aspiring UFC fighter?

The advice that I would give is to practice every sport you can.  There are so many variations of things that you need to be good at to be successful in MMA fighting.  You have to practice and stay well rounded.  Also, make sure to work on defense more than offense.  The more defensive you are the less of a beating you will take.

What is the toughest fight you have ever had?

I used to get beat up by the Trotter twins growing up for a couple of years.  I would do okay against one of them and then the other brother would jump in and I'd get beaten up.  Professionally, it was against Scott Junk on the Ultimate Fighter.  It was my 1st pro fight.  I really didn't know what I was doing.  I spent 3 minutes just punching him in the face.  All of a sudden I had no energy out, I gassed out.  I really struggled for the rest of the fight.  I had to dig deep to finish the fight.
