Leonard Garcia

UFC Fighter

1.) What advice do you have for an aspiring MMA Fighter?

To get to a gym where the coach will feed off the things that you do well. There are a lot of gyms that are cookie cutter, where they have one really good fighter, and they kind of just focus on that guy and they try to make everyone else like that really good fighter. The gyms that excel and have great fighters, are the ones where the coach knows that every fighter is different. Every aspiring fighter should go to a gym where they feel that their style is not being changed or mimicked.

2.) What has been the highlight of your career?

The 7 years that I was in the UFC was great, but the highlight was when I knocked out Jens Pulver. That was a great fight for me, and I looked up to him and watched his fights growing up, but to fight him and beat him, was a highlight.

3.) I saw that you're now training at Team Alpha Male, why did you switch gyms from Jacksons MMA?

I'm training at both places at the moment. My last camp, I trained the first half at Team Alpha Male, then I ended it at Jacksons MMA. This time I started my camp at Jacksons. I am very lucky to be able to train at both places, they're two really high level gyms. I have 2 guys who I train with, but they're not teammates that fought each other, Clay Guida & Chad Mendes, and I'm fortunate to be able to train at 2 high level places. It's a blessing for me.

4.) What does a typical day look like for you?

I wake up when I'm not in Sacramento at about 8:00 AM, by 8:30 AM we're out the door, I start training at 9:00 AM, and finish at 10:30 AM, get something to eat, head back to the gym at about 2:00 PM for a workout, come back home, eat, take a nap, then head back at 6:00 PM, work till 8:30 PM. When I'm not in camp I train once a day, but then I train twice a day when I'm in camp.

5.) What do you like to do in your free time?

Spending time with the family. When you go to camp, you have to turn into a fighter, you have to do things differently, you have to think what you're going to do in a fight. So my family spends time away from me well I'm in camp. When I'm not fighting, I love to hang out with my family.

6.) Who has been the toughest fighter you've faced?

The Korean Zombie was the toughest guy. I hit him with shots that usually make people go down, I even broke my hand so I know they they were heavy shots, and he just kept coming and never stopped.

7.) You're fighting Nick Gonzalez on September 13 at Legacy Fighting, how do you see the fight ending?

Nick is a tough guy, a veteran of the sport, I really hope to get a submission victory in the fight. He does a lot of stand up. If I stand with him, I think I'd knock him out as well.
