Shane Carwin

Former UFC Champion

1.) What advice do you have for an aspiring MMA Fighter?

Get a good education, because you need to be pounded in the brain to become a good fighter. The training is 80% physical, and 20% mental. Once you get to the big event, you get 90% mental, and 10% physical. Work on school, and start wrestling and doing jiu-jitsu at a young age. As you get older, you'll progress to boxing and kickboxing.

2.) What has been the highlight of your career?

Being able to fight in the UFC. Being blessed by god, and being able to use those gifts. All the fights in the UFC are special to me.

3.) What are your goals for 2014?

Being able to hang out with my wife and kids. Also, going on to other successful ventures in my life.

4.) Many students are dealing with bullying, what are your thoughts about bullies, and ways to prevent/stop the problem?

Bullying is really frowned upon now. It was never brought up when we were kids. I believe in bullying karma, and I think that what the bullies do to other kids, will come back to the bully and haunt them. Someday the kid who is getting bullied, may be the bullies boss.

5.) Many people believe MMA is just a violent sport, how would you respond to this belief?

You just brought up bullying, so I would get the kid being bullied in MMA, as well as getting the bully in MMA, because MMA teaches discipline and respect. That's what the bully needs, but the kid who is being bullied needs to learn how to box, wrestle, jiu-jitsu, and kickboxing. These bring self-confidence for the kid being bullied.

6.) What is something about being a MMA fighter, that a casual fan wouldn't know about?

How often, and how many times a day that we train.

7.) Who were your heroes growing up?

My mom, she raised three boys on her own.
