Brian Melancon

UFC Fighter

1.) What advice do you have for an aspiring MMA Fighter?

To go to college at the same time your training. You can fight in your amateur career. That way you'll have something to fall back on, and you won't have as much pressure on you when you do fight. Start training everything, but wrestling is the most important, because you will be able to decide where the fight will go. Don't make being an MMA fighter your only option.

2.) What has been your career highlight so far?

I'd have to say my UFC debut on the Silva, Weidman card. It was pretty much the biggest card of the year. Getting the first round knockout, and showing that I belong, was the highlight.

3.) What are your goals for 2013-2014?

I just take it one fight at a time. My goal right when I got in the UFC was to win my debut, and I already accomplished that. My next fight, I want to show what I'm able to do. My focus is to win my next fight, and show that my last fight wasn't me.

4.) What do you like to do in your free time?

That doesn't leave much time, but I spend time with my wife. I like to go camping and grill, outside stuff. I like to hang out with my family, and just lay back and relax.

5.) What does a typical training day look like for you?

I train in the morning for about an hour and a half or two hours. That's usually wrestling or stand up training. Then I go back and get a workout in at about 2:00 PM for about an hour and a half. Then at night, I either wrestle for an hour, or we do sparring a couple of times a week.

6.) Who has been the toughest fight you've faced?

The toughest fighter, as far as taking a punch would be Isaac Vallie-Flagg. I fought him in my first fight in Strikeforce. I took this fight on 7 days notice and he did to. I dropped 25 pounds and hadn't been training. I felt that I could KO him, and I hit him with shots that other people didn't get up from, and he just kept fighting.

7.) Who were your heroes growing up?

In sports, I was a big Joe Montana fan when I was a kid. I was also big into baseball. I liked a lot of different baseball players. In fighting it was Fedor Emelianenko. When I first got into training MMA, he was the best at the time. The way he put everything together is the reason why he's my hero in MMA.
