Conclusion of the Summer

By: Shannon Stern

There was a chill in the air at the Dew Tour in San Francisco. Summer is over; it is time for snowboarding and skiing to take centerfield. But, before the snow starts to fall, the skateboards, bicycles, and motorcycles took to San Francisco to round out their 2013 competition season.

The competition weekend started off with a bang on October 10th. Kelvin Hoefler took the top spot in Thursday night’s Skateboard Street Prelims. Felipe Gustavo qualified in second with newly pro skater Curren Caples qualifying third. The Street competitions continued to dominate on Friday, with both BMX and Skate Semi-Finals. 2012 BMX Street runner-up, Chad Kerley, qualified first into Saturday’s BMX Street Finals. The previous year’s winner, Garrett Reynolds, qualified second and Dan Lacey qualified third. Youth dominated the Skate Street Semi-Finals. Another new pro skater, Louie Lopez, qualified first, with Hoefler and Sean Malto qualifying second and third respectively. Over on the BMX Dirt side, Daniel Sandoval qualified first to Saturday’s BMX Dirt Finals. Qualifying in second was new father Kyle Baldock and in third was Jaie Toohey.

Injuries, unfortunately plagued the weekend. Many notables in both Skate and BMX were unable to participate in their respective events. This allowed some new guns to step up to the plate. Saturday’s Skate Street Finals were all about Lopez. This was Lopez’s first Dew Tour appearance. He capped off the weekend his first Dew Cup. Hoefler continued his weekend of success, getting second place in the finals. Ryan Decenzo, a well-known Dew Tour competitor, took home third.

The final two events of Saturday were all about BMX. The battle raged on between Reynolds and Kerley in the Street Finals. In the end, Reynolds reclaimed his title, winning back to back BMX Street Dew Cups. Kerley placed second, and Lacey placed third. Baldock had something to smile about Saturday night. He took home a Dew Cup in BMX Street, with Sandoval getting second place and Toohey getting third place.

Sunday was the massive conclusion to a weekend of sports. Art, as seen through the Dew Tour Recognize. Photography and music, as seen through the Common concert. Sunday morning’s competition had the street outside of City Hall roaring. The FMX Triple Threat final had Adam Jones finish on top of the pack, with Todd Potter finishing second and Takayuki Higashino finishing third, all within one point of each other.

Ryan Sheckler captured another win on Sunday, winning his second consecutive Skate Streetstyle Dew Cup. Sheckler dominated the competition, earning a 90.00 on his first run, setting the tone for the remainder of the competition. Caples edged closer to the top spot with his third run, earning him second place with a score of 89.75. Landing the third place podium spot for the second year in a row was David Gravette with a score of 88.00. Fellow skateboarder Manny Santiago had some fun with his fellow skaters, challenging them to certain tricks throughout the competition. Sheckler followed through with the request, making history by landing a kickflip off of the storage container. Concluding the 2013 Toyota City Championships was BMX Streetstyle. With Harrison Street as their playground, the athletes tore up the streets in style. Reynolds was no longer the king of BMX Streetstyle, as Kerley won this battle, finishing a full point ahead of the rest of the competition. Ty Morrow finished in second place with a score of 86.00. Scotty Cranmer rounded out the podium with a score of 85.75.

Although the summer is officially over, the Dew Tour is not. Make sure to be on the lookout for the iON Mountain Championships in Breckenridge, Colorado. This event running from December 12th to the 15th, was recently announced to be an Olympic Selection Event. Be sure to tune into NBC, its affiliates, and the Dew Tour Live webcast to check out all the action!
