Sakio Bika

WBC Champion

1.) What advice do you have for an aspiring boxer?

It takes a lot to become a boxer. At the beginning, some boxers do it for fun, and when they get serious in the gym, then they say “maybe I can do it”. Every kid who goes to the gym does it for fun, but then when they start to take it more serious, they say “I want to become a professional”. Then as they do it more, they’ll decide if that’s what they want to do.

2.) What has been your career highlight?

When I fought on The Contender, and when I won on season three. I fought Lucian Bute, and Joe Calzaghe. A lot of people didn’t know who I was, then when I was on the show, they new exactly what I could do.

3.) What are your goals for 2013?

To defend my belt as many times as I can, I want to be the best in the Super Middleweight Division. Also, I want to look after my kids and wife. I have three beautiful children.

4.) How have you been preparing for your fight against Anthony Dirrell?

I’ve been working very hard. I’ve had a very tough five-week preparation. It was very tough. As a professional boxer, it’s not an easy job. When you decide you want to become a professional, you have to sacrifice things such as not being with your family or friends as much.  I’ve been training very hard for my fight on December 6th. I’m looking to beat Anthony and retain my belt.

5.) How do you see the fight ending?

I don’t know how the fight will go. My goal is just to train hard, and win the fight. I don’t care if it goes to decision, or if I can stop him. I just want my hand to be raised! The main goal is just to defend my belt.

6.) What is the best part of his game?

He’s training very hard, it’s the first time he’s fighting for the world title. Everyone wants to grab my belt. I just won my belt, and I want to keep it.

7.) What does a typical training day look like for you?

I wake up at 6:00 AM, do a 30-40 minute run, come home, rest, eat breakfast, go back to the gym and do tons of different kind of training, rest, go back to the gym, shower, then rest.

8.) Who else is on your radar?

I want to fight Chavez, I want the rematch with Andre Ward, maybe Froch. In the future, I want to fight Bernard Hopkins. He is my idol, to fight him would be a dream come true. Even if I don’t beat him, he’s still my idol. I’d remove my hat for him. He’s is one of the best in boxing.

9.) What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to pick up my kid from school. I really like soccer. I want to help kids, because I went through difficulties when I was young in Cameroon. I know it is difficult for young kids their, some of them don’t have a chance. In the future, I want to show kids the right way, and show them a vision, like going to school, or participating in a sport. You have to follow your goals.
