Louis Smolka

UFC Fighter

1.) You just pulled an upset of Alp in the UFC, who’s on your radar?

I am really hoping to get into title contention, but I will probably have a couple of fights first.

2.) Alp is known as a wrestler. You used the clinch knees very well. Is that how you planned on stopping his takedowns?

That was actually improvised. What we actually thought would happen going into the fight was he was going to punch at the body, which he was. So as he came in to punch the body, I just was using my knees. I do that in a lot of my fights, I knee them to make my opponents think twice about trying to take me down! The third knee I hit him with, he didn’t seem the same after that.

3.) What has been the highlight of your career?

My debut in the UFC! I’ve done a few good things, but winning my UFC debut is the biggest so far.

4.) What are your goals for 2014?

I’d like to go undefeated; I’d like to see all my teammates go undefeated. Russell Doane, Dustin, all of them. I’d like to get a main card fight by the end of 2014.

5.) What does a typical training day look like?

I wake up in the morning, depending on the day of the week, I will do either strength/conditioning, or I’ll do work with my striking coach. Most of the time we do mitt work. After this, I’ll rest for a while and sometimes I’ll teach classes. At night I’ll do grappling at 808. I’m going to start doing jiu-jitsu.

6.) What do you like to do in your free time?

I like to eat and play video games. I just got the Xbox 1 and it cut my gaming time short!

7.) Who were your heroes growing up?

BJ Penn, I liked Fedor, Matt Hughes, right now Jose Aldo, he’s like a god.

8.) If you weren’t an MMA Fighter, what would you be?

I don’t know what I’d be doing if I wasn’t in this sport. I’ve been involved in it since I was a little kid. Maybe surfing!

9.) What’s your favorite part about being an MMA Fighter?

I love sparring/grappling and working every day to get better. I love the feeling at the end of the day when I’m tired and can’t move.

10.) If you could say a couple of words to the opponents in the Flyweight division, what would they be?

I’m coming. I’m here to make a run for the title. I’m here to win.
