Sam Oropeza

Bellator Fighter

1.) What advice do you have for an aspiring MMA Fighter?

Get into the sports if you absolutely love it. If you love to test yourself, love competition, and love to challenge yourself. Don’t get into the sport because you want to fight somebody. I got into the sport to learn, not to fight someone.

2.) What has been your career highlight?

I’d have to say my most recent fight in Bellator when I knocked out Chip Moraza-Pollard in 37 seconds. This got me into the Bellator Tournament. Another would be fighting on the Strikeforce card with Fedor on it. He’s been my idol since day one. Bas Rutten commentated my fight who has been another idol since day one. Last, my loss at Bellator 44, if I didn’t get that loss, I wouldn’t be where I am right now.

3.) What are your goals for 2014?

Win the Bellator Tournament and become a World Champion because that has been my vision for many years now. I’ve worked very hard for this goal, and I believe it’s possible. If it doesn’t happen this year, I’ll look for these goals in 2015. I want to keep working hard.

4.) You’re fighting UFC & Strikeforce veteran Joe Riggs, how do you plan on defeating him?

There is not secret in fighting Joe Riggs other than hard work. I just got done with my second hard training session in Las Vegas. Everyone is given 24 hours in a day, and what you do with these hours if going to make you great, or make you not as good. I’m going to keep working hard. I’ve got to work with a lot of fighters. I just got to train with Marvin Eastman. I think the knowledge I’m gaining, and hard work will beat Joe Riggs.

5.) What do you like to do in your free time?

I have an unbelievably amazing girlfriend. She’s so beautiful and I love her so much. We also have this amazing dog Stella. I like spending time with both of them, and my family. I like to read, and listen to music.

6.) Who’s been your toughest opponent?

My toughest fight was against Giedrius Karavackas. He was an Olympic Judo athlete. He was just a tough person. I fought him when I was 23, and he was ten years older than me. I did everything I could to win the fight, but he stayed in longer than I did. I have nothing but respect for him.
