Cal Football - The Best and the Brightest
By:  Jennie Vo - Intern

Yes, I understand that last season they went 1-11 in the Pac 12 and that their defense was the worst in school history. However, if we use a record to measure how great (or bad) a team is, then aren't we just measuring the amount of talent and teamwork that encompasses a team? What about the work ethic of a team? Or the drive to keep their gears grinding late in the fourth quarter even though their team is down twenty or even forty points? I believe that to truly call a team "the best" we shouldn't use a record to be the judging criteria for that label.

If we take a look at the Cal football squad during the 2013-2014 season, we see that the team was plagued with many injuries, leaving tons of holes in the defense. On the other hand, we also see a promising future in quarterback Jared Goff (15), who at one point, was in the top 10 for most thrown yards in the nation. But what makes this group of guys so fun to watch is their will to be better. Each and every minute of the game, these guys refuse to give up, just because they're down twenty or forty. One game in particular that I'll always remember is the Cal vs Arizona game where they were down the whole game. And even though they were down twelve with a little over one minute in the fourth, they still didn't hang their heads on the sideline, or on the field. They kept going at the Arizona defense and in an instant, the lead was cut to 5, with a clutch pass from Goff to Lawler (4). And although fans started walking out the stadium, in that moment they all stopped, and stayed 'til the very end, cheering "This is Bear Territory!"

Although there wasn't enough time left for the Bears to fight back, it was enough for anyone in Memorial Stadium to see that we have a great squad out there, if not the best. We don't just have a team full of young athletes, but we have a team full of warriors, who pour their hearts and souls onto the field each and every game. The future is bright for the Cal Bears and next season, they're coming with vengeance.
