Cully Butterfield Pre-Fight Interview

By: Matthew Pearlman

Unexpected moments can be good or bad. In the 14-3 professional MMA fighter Cully Butterfield’s case, it happened to be a great moment!

As you can imagine, Butterfield was in quite a bit of shock when he found out that he’d be fighting on WSOF 12. I asked him to walk me through everything that happened in that moment. “I just got done with work and was on my way home from one of my two jobs when I got the news. It was probably 3 or 4 PM, and I got a text from my manager saying that I got offered to be on one of the biggest MMA promotions in America, WSOF. I was just in shock, and I responded 15-20 minutes later saying, “yes! I want the fight!”

After two replacements backed out, Butterfield was called on short notice. Butterfield walked me through how he has been preparing for the past few days. “I have been working on my Jiu-Jitsu, wrestling, muay thai... I’ve been doing a lot of cardio as well. In since it’s a short notice fight, and I wasn’t in training camp to long before this, I’ve taken time off of work just so I can prepare for this fight.”

Butterfield has fought some tough guys in his career. I asked him if Markes would be his toughest opponent. “Yeah. He will probably be the toughest opponent I’ve faced. I’ve faced a lot of tough guys, such as Egidijus Valavicius, who’s in Bellator, but Markes is the toughest.”

This fight could end in many different ways, as both fighters are pretty well rounded and anything can happen in MMA. When Butterfield was asked about how he thinks the fight will end, he said, “I wouldn’t be surprised if it went the distance. Hopefully I can knock him down, get on top, and finish him with ground and pound. I don’t see a submission finish from either of us. It will either be a TKO or a decision I think.

Butterfield works two jobs, not including training. He walked me through a typical training day, “I get up, go for a run, train from 3PM-9:00PM, focus on Jiu-Jitsu, kickboxing, and wrestling. It usually changes. Then I go to a different job.

This is a huge fight for Butterfield as he’s facing a UFC veteran. When asked about where he thinks this puts him if he wins, he said, “I really haven’t thought about it. Hopefully I win this, then I’ll probably stick with WSOF and fight a few more fights for them. Hopefully the UFC calls after. This should show everyone I belong with the best in the world, and I’m not just a big kid who fights, I am one of the best. I’m hoping this really boosts my career.”

As Butterfield said above, he trains pretty much every aspect of MMA. I asked him what the best attribute of his game was. “I was an All-American wrestler in college, so I’d have to say wrestling is still my best attribute. In this fight, it may be a little different in this fight because we both have good ground game, so I may have to capitalize more on my stand up.”

Watch Cully Butterfield take on UFC veteran Ronny Markes in the co-main event of WSOF 12 in Las Vegas, Nevada live on NBC Sports Network.
