Pac 12 matchup: Washington Huskies vs. California Golden Bears

By: Jennie Vo

It was the penalties and turnovers that gave Cal a rocky start. Unfortunately for the Bears, they could not find their rhythm on offense throughout the whole game - with the exception of a couple of spurts of momentum.
In the first quarter, both teams started off slow with back to back punts. Cal then gets some momentum when Jared Goff (Cal, QB, 16) completes a ten yard pass to Bryce Treggs (Cal, WR,1). On this drive, the Bears were able to travel all the way down to their own 2 yard line. Their momentum ceased the next play when Goff fumbles the football into Shaq Thompson’s (Wash, LB, 7) hands as he tried to dive into the end zone. Thompson would then run the ball for 99 yards for Washington’s first touchdown. Cal’s slow offensive start didn’t end there. Later on in the first quarter, Goff again fumbled the ball. Cyler Miles (Wash, QB, 10) would capitalize on Cal’s turnover as he threw to Joshua Perkins (Wash, TE, 82) for a 25 yard touchdown. After back to back turnovers from Cal, Washington was able to extend their lead to 14 before the end of the quarter.
The second quarter wasn’t much different from the first. Cal’s offense could not find their flow, and could not reach the end zone. Halfway through the second quarter, Washington scored again with a 11 yard TD catch by DiAndre Campbell (Wash, WR, from QB Miles - extending the lead 21-0. Nearing the one minute mark, John Ross (Wash, WR, 1) weaved through Cal’s defense for a 86 yard TD. By the end of the half, Washington led 28-0.
In the third, Cal had a small shift in momentum as Daniel Lasco (Cal, RB, 2) rushed 3 yards for Cal’s first touchdown of the night. In the fourth, Washington’s defense prevented Cal from scoring another point. Washington’s only score in the fourth was a field goal kick, which extended their lead 31-7. This is also the final score of the game.
This game was completely different from what anyone would expect after Cal’s last three high-scoring, intense games. Washington’s defense held them scoreless for three quarters. Cal’s offense lacked rhythm and momentum; however, their defense did pretty well against Washington considering they were without three of their starters - Brennan Scarlett (knee), Stefan McClure (calf) and Michael Lowe (head) due to injuries.
Washington quarterback, Cyler Miles threw for 273 yards with 3 touchdowns and Cal quarterback, Jared Goff threw for 304 yards with no touchdowns. Cal’s Daniel Lasco carried the ball 17 times for 71 yards and 1 touchdown. Cal is now 3rd in the North Division of the Pac 12 and Washington is ranked 4th.
