Jeff Gordon & Brian McKenna

590 The Fan Sports Radio

What is your favorite part about being a reporter?

(Jeff)   I just like sports and always have.  You never know what is going to happen.  It is very unpredictable.  Everything is new each day.  There is no script and we can always be surprised pleasantly or unpleasantly.  If you like sports and can do it for a living, that is phenomenal.

(Brian)  Being able to work with Jeff Gordon, okay I'm only saying that because he is sitting next to me.  I played sports my whole life.  I can't think of a better way to make a living.  I've worked very hard to get where I am.  When I get in my car each day, I'm really jacked up!

What advice do you have for an aspiring reporter?

(Jeff)  The technology changes so quickly, you have to be prepared to do everything - video, audio, and be able to write.  All the media is merging together, so all those skills are important.  With the internet, everything runs together.

(Brian)  Just follow your dream.  Work as hard as you can.  Study as hard as you can.  Be willing to take advice.  Don't give up!  If you believe it, you can achieve it!

If you were not a reporter, what would you be?

(Jeff)  The only other thing that I have ever done is worked in a restaurant.  That is something that I enjoyed.  A lot of other jobs would be tough after doing all of this.

(Brian)  I would probably be a rock star.  Okay, I'm joking.  I would  be either a police man or fire fighter.  They are such honorable professions, putting their life on the line every single day.  My twin brother was a police officer.  I've always respected that profession.  They wake up each day thinking of others.

Who were your heroes growing up?

(Jeff)  I grew up a long time ago, I'm ancient.  I grew up in Detroit.  The guys I watched were:  Dave Bing, Al Kaline, Gordie Howe.

(Brian)  It is going to sound corny, but my dad was my hero.  He raised 10 kids and made each one of us feel special.  That is what a great coach does.  My mom too.  They taught me right from wrong.  We never had a lot of money, but we had a lot of love.

What was your favorite subject in school?

(Jeff)  Oddly, geography.  I got to college and did well with geography.  I realized that there wasn't too much I could do with geography.  The journalism was a hot major when I went to college.  I needed to find something that didn't require much math and science.

(Brian)  In grade school, I was so into sports.  My dad told me that you can't play sports unless you study.  So I studied.  I read a lot of sports books.   If I had to pick one subject, I'd say social studies.

What is your career highlight so far?

(Jeff)  Getting the job here in St. Louis.  Having the opportunity to work for the Post-Dispatch.  My wife and I really like St. Louis.  I had worked in small papers and magazines.  Joining the Post-Dispatch in 1986 was a real cause for celebration.

(Brian)  In about 2001, I was working on the #1 morning radio show and also part of the Rams radio network when they went to the Super Bowl.  I was also doing TV for the Rams pre-game show.
