Sports Reporter

What is your favorite part about being a sports writer?

I love my job and feel very fortunate to be doing what I've dreamed of doing and worked very hard to do. There are a million different things I love about my job which makes it is kind of difficult to pick out one favorite. But I guess it would be a combination of the people I work with, including the athletes I cover, and the game of golf as the platform. I have covered many sports from the production side of television but by far I am the most passionate about golf. I believe it's because golf is a global sport with a very rich history. I love that people of all ages and backgrounds relate to the game and the athletes that compete professionally because golf is a game, a sport, that people of all ages, shapes, and sizes can play. So every golfer on some level shares the same universal feelings about the game. I also love the nature of the game as a gentleman's game (or lady's game for that matter). It is honorable, it is not violent, it is played in beautiful settings that lots of people pour their hearts into, and it is governed by rules that are enforced by oneself. As a golf reporter I love reading old golf stories, hearing tales of touring pros of the past...and those of the present. It's the people & places that I love learning stories about and as a reporter I love having the ability to share those stories and new stories about this golf generation.

What advice do you have for an aspiring sports writer?

Be curious! Read about the past. Talk to as many people as you can to learn as much as you can about the industry. Don't be afraid to identify a very specific goal and share it with others. You can always revise your goal but if you don't know what you want to do how can you expect to get there or ask other people to help you? Also, don't be scared to think creatively about the industry and how to "break in" and "move up." Too many people follow the "tried and true" route and that's how you get lost in the shuffle!

Who were your heroes growing up?

I'd have to say my main heroine was my grandmother Joan Williams Hight. Born in 1917 she was a big advocate for women's rights and civil rights. She was a very strong woman but also a very kind and very fun person. She was vivacious, the life of the party, never afraid to share her opinions and point of view, even when it went against the grain, which it often did. She read everything she could and was very plugged in with the news. My middle name is Joan and I always felt a very strong connection to her. She was an amazing person.

What was your favorite subject in school?

English was always my favorite. I didn't love literature but I loved writing essays and papers. I loved doing research and writing about my findings and writing my point of view and thoughts. I hated math. Still do...which is kind of unfortunate when I have to report scores and stats and compute them quickly in my head!.

What was the most unusual interview you have had so far?

I recently interviewed a professional surfer who is the club champion at Half Moon Bay in California. His name is Jeff Clarke. He is one of the most fearless people I've ever met. He's a legend in his sport, but it was crazy to see how he was so passionate and so talented as a golfer as well. So much of golf is mental, between the ears so they say, and I believe he has mastered mental toughness through surfing. And it shows in his golf game. It's unreal to watch!

If you were not a reporter, what would you be?

If I could have one artistic gift it would be to be able to sing really well and with that talent I'd love to be a rock star! Since I don't have that talent that is not what I'd be...So hmmm I don't know! I did work briefly in college and right out of college in public relations but I hated it! .
