What is your favorite part about being an author?

When you write something it starts out very alone, you and your computer.  Only a couple of people may know about it.  You know that when the book comes out that hundreds of thousands or even millions of people will read it.

If you were not an author, what would you be?

I always got better grades in math and science.  I would probably have been an engineer or scientist.  I wrote my first book as a school project in middle school when I was 12.  I never really found out what else I could be.  I have always been a writer.

Who were your heroes growing up?

I'm from Canada.  Most of my heroes are hockey players.  Even though I grew up in Toronto, I was a Boston Bruins fan.  In the 1970's, the big guys were Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr.  As a kid, I was focused on hockey.

What advice do you have for an aspiring writer?

Read a lot.  Most of the writers I know are big time readers.  Also, write a lot.  You get better at stuff that you do a lot of.  In a lot of ways, its like sports.  If you can't make a free throw, your coach puts you on the line and makes you practice lots of free throws.  By writing a lot, you see what works and what doesn't and this improves your skill.

What is the last book you read?

The Story of the Titanic As Told By the Survivors.  I'm writing a Titanic series so a lot of the books I've been reading are research for writing this series.  The book was written right after the Titanic sank and by people who were actually in the life boats who survived.
