Bruce Pearl

NCAA Coach

What is your career highlight so far?

Accepting the job at Tennessee and reaching accomplishments that had never even been imagined for the Volunteers.  From finishing ahead of Kentucky for four straight seasons, to winning the SEC, and then making the first Elite 8 in the schools history - and coming seconds from the Final Four.

What advice do you have for an aspiring athlete/coach?

That you can honestly do whatever you want to do.  I would also stress that you have to be the most honest and sincere person you can be.  Cheating won't get you anywhere and can ruin everything.

Who were your heroes growing up?

I loved basketball; so obviously, people like Adolph Rupp and John Wooden were idols of mine.  But there were people in my neighborhood that I looked up to that have really influenced my life.

If you weren't a coach, what would you be?

An actor.  I would say a motivator, but that is a bit connected to a coach.  I would try to land an acting job as a basketball coach!  In all seriousness, I would be a teacher.  I love seeing the success of students and players and watching them reach heights that are far higher than what they originally expected.  It brings such happiness seeing others do well.

What is your favorite quote and why?

"Adversity causes some men to break; others to break records."  - William Arthur Ward   There are plenty of other quotes that are very inspirational (and funny), but I must say that this is a great quote.
